Why high-mix job shops are hard to schedule
The difficulty is not volume. It is that almost every input varies job to job, and the variations interact.
- Unique routings. Two jobs on the same machine may share nothing else — different operations, different sequence, different downstream work centres.
- Short runs. When run time is measured in hours, setup is a large fraction of total time, so sequencing decisions dominate throughput.
- Frequent setups. Changeovers are sequence-dependent; the order jobs run in changes how much capacity the shop actually has.
- Shared work centres. One saw, one grinder or one CMM feeds many routings, so a small delay there propagates broadly.
- Skilled labour constraints. Three machines and one operator qualified to run them is a labour problem, not a machine problem.

High-mix low-volume (HMLV) manufacturing produces many different part numbers in small quantities, often to customer order. Each job can have its own routing, setup, run time, material, due date and operator skill requirement, so capacity planning cannot rely on repeating patterns the way repetitive manufacturing can.
Why does ERP scheduling struggle with high-mix manufacturing?
Most ERP schedulers plan from a snapshot using standard run times and infinite or lightly constrained capacity.
